Dedicated Community Advocates at Your Service.
Sunnyside Civic Club, Inc. has been serving in Houston, Texas since 1952. We have been promoting relentlessly our advocacy of improving the lives of our neighborhood and community.
History of Sunnyside
Thousands of enslaved African Americans lived near Houston, Texas before the Civil War. Those near the city worked on cotton and sugar plantations, while others were limited to having domestic and artisan jobs.
In 1860, 49% of the city's population was enslaved. African Americans started to settle in the community founded by H. H. Holmes, which he named Sunnyside when it opened in the 1910s.
Sunnyside is the oldest African American community in southern Houston. It was first platted in 1912.
